It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
