It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
