It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
