It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
