It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
