It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
