It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
