It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
