It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
