one page resume template
It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
