It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
