It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
