It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
