It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
