It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
