It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
