It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
