It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
