It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
