It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
