It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
