It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
