It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
