It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
