It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
