It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
