It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
