It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
