It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
