It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
