It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
