It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
