It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
