It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
