It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
