It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
