It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
