It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
