It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
