It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
