It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
