It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
