It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
