It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
