It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
