It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
