It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
