It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
