postcard back template 4×6
It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
