It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
